random-access memory

Quick-access computer storage

Random-access memory is computer memory that can be read from or written to in any order, regardless of where the data is stored.

Usually called RAM, it serves as a computer's working memory—fast but temporary, losing its contents when power is cut.

My laptop needs more RAM to run smoothly.

Contrast with storage memory, which persists.
