punchcutting

Making metal type

Punchcutting is the craft of carving letter forms into the end of a steel rod to create a punch, which is then used to stamp matrices for casting metal type.

Before digital typography, punchcutters were the original type designers, shaping letters in reverse at tiny scale with hand tools.

The craft required extraordinary precision—a skilled punchcutter might spend a day on a single letter.

The Garamond typefaces trace back to sixteenth-century punchcutting.
