rocket propellant
Thrust-generating mixture
Rocket propellant is the material—fuel, oxidizer, or both—that produces thrust when expelled from a rocket engine.
Propellants may be solid (packed into the rocket casing), liquid (stored in tanks and mixed in a combustion chamber), or hybrid combinations.
The shuttle's external tank held liquid hydrogen and oxygen propellant.
Unlike jet engines, rockets carry their own oxidizer, enabling operation in space.
