personal pronouns
Words replacing names
Personal pronouns are words that stand in for people or things: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, and their various forms.
They shift based on grammatical role—I as subject becomes me as object, she becomes her.
English personal pronouns also mark number and, in the third person singular, gender.
The singular they has become standard for people who don't identify as male or female, and for referring to someone whose gender is unknown: Someone left their umbrella.
