prefects

School authority figures

Prefects are students given limited authority over other students, typically in British and Commonwealth schools.

They monitor hallways, enforce rules, and report misconduct—a layer of discipline between teachers and pupils.

The term also applies to certain government officials, especially in France, where a prefect administers a department or region: The prefect ordered the evacuation.
