reprimand

Formal verbal censure

A reprimand is a formal expression of disapproval, typically from someone in authority: The officer received a written reprimand for misconduct.

To reprimand someone is to rebuke them sharply: The teacher reprimanded the students for talking during the exam.

A reprimand carries more official weight than a scolding but stops short of punishment.
