preambles

Words before beginning

Preambles are introductory statements or preliminary remarks that precede the main text or action.

The preamble to a constitution or treaty sets out its purposes and principles.

In everyday use, preambles are the windup before getting to the point: After a few preambles about the weather, she got down to business.

To skip the preambles is to dispense with formalities.
