pituitary gland

Brain's hormone center

The pituitary gland is a pea-sized organ at the base of the brain that secretes hormones regulating growth, metabolism, reproduction, and other bodily functions.

Often called the "master gland," it controls other endocrine glands: The pituitary gland signals the thyroid to produce hormones.

Pituitary tumors can cause hormonal imbalances affecting everything from height to fertility.
