pentaprism

Five-sided optical element

A pentaprism is a five-sided glass prism used in optical devices to deviate light by 90 degrees without inverting or reversing the image.

Found most commonly in single-lens reflex cameras, the pentaprism sits above the mirror and allows photographers to see through the viewfinder exactly what the lens sees, right-side up and correctly oriented.
