mirror box

Phantom limb therapy

A mirror box is a device used in physical therapy and pain management, consisting of a box with mirrors that creates a visual illusion of a missing or impaired limb.

Originally developed to treat phantom limb pain in amputees, it works by reflecting the healthy limb to trick the brain: The therapist had him place his intact hand in the mirror box while imagining moving his amputated one.

Mirror boxes are also used in stroke rehabilitation to help restore movement.
