cubs

Young wild carnivores

Cubs are the young of certain wild mammals—lions, bears, wolves, foxes, and tigers among them.

The word suggests creatures not yet grown into their adult power: The mother bear watched over her cubs.

A cub can also be an inexperienced young person, especially in compounds like cub reporter or cub scout. (Capitalized Cubs refers to the Chicago baseball team.)
