oread
Peak-dwelling maiden
An oread is a mountain nymph in Greek mythology, one of the nature spirits who inhabited mountains and grottoes.
The oreads were companions of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and roamed wild highland places: The poem imagined oreads dancing on the rocky slopes.
The word appears mainly in literary and classical contexts.
