obolus
Ancient Greek coin
An obolus was a small coin in ancient Greece, worth one-sixth of a drachma.
The term appears most often in references to the coin placed in or on a dead person's mouth as payment to Charon, the ferryman who carried souls across the river Styx to the underworld.
