neutral states
Nonaligned political entities
Neutral states are countries that maintain a policy of neutrality, declining to take sides in wars or military alliances between other nations.
Switzerland and Austria are classic examples, remaining outside NATO and other defense pacts.
The term also appears in international law discussions: Neutral states have certain rights and obligations during armed conflicts between belligerents.
