military alliance
Joint defense treaty
A military alliance is a formal agreement between nations to defend one another in case of attack or to cooperate in military operations.
Members typically pledge mutual support—an attack on one is treated as an attack on all.
NATO is the most prominent example: The military alliance expanded eastward after the Cold War.
Such alliances may include joint exercises, shared intelligence, and coordinated command structures.
