navicular disease
Equine heel syndrome
Navicular disease is a chronic condition affecting horses, causing pain and lameness in the front feet.
The navicular bone—a small bone in the hoof—degenerates along with surrounding structures.
Once a common diagnosis for front-leg lameness, the term now often gives way to more specific diagnoses as veterinary imaging has improved: The mare was retired early due to navicular disease.
