laminitis

Equine foot disease

Laminitis is a painful inflammatory condition affecting the hooves of horses, donkeys, and other hoofed animals.

The laminae—tissues connecting the hoof wall to the underlying bone—become inflamed and may separate, potentially causing the coffin bone to rotate or sink.

Severe cases can be crippling or fatal.

Causes include overeating grain, grazing on lush pasture, or metabolic disorders.
