national convention
Delegates choose nominees
A national convention is a large gathering where a political party formally nominates its candidates for president and vice president, adopts its platform, and rallies supporters.
In the U.S., the Democratic and Republican parties hold national conventions every four years during presidential election season: The delegates cast their votes at the national convention.
The term also applies to nationwide meetings of other organizations—professional associations, fraternal orders, or advocacy groups.
