balloon drop
Party ceiling surprise
A balloon drop is the release of many balloons from a net or container suspended overhead, typically at the climax of a celebration.
Political conventions stage balloon drops when nominees accept their party's nomination.
New Year's Eve parties and grand openings use them as festive punctuation: The balloon drop signaled midnight had arrived.
