open primaries
Any-voter party contests
Open primaries are primary elections in which voters can participate regardless of their party affiliation or registration.
In contrast to closed primaries, where only registered party members may vote, open primaries allow independents—and sometimes members of opposing parties—to help select a party's candidates.
Critics argue this lets outsiders influence nominations; supporters say it produces more moderate candidates and increases voter participation.
