cloven-hoofed
Divided hoof animal
Cloven-hoofed describes animals whose hooves are divided into two toes, such as cattle, sheep, goats, deer, and pigs.
The cleft runs down the middle of what would otherwise be a single hoof.
In biblical dietary laws, only cloven-hoofed animals that also chew cud are considered clean.
The devil is traditionally depicted with cloven hooves, so the term sometimes carries sinister overtones: a cloven-hoofed beast.
