mudcloth

Fermented mud fabric

Mudcloth is a traditional West African textile, especially from Mali, made by dyeing cotton with fermented mud to create distinctive geometric patterns.

The mud contains iron that bonds with the fabric, producing earthy browns and blacks against lighter backgrounds.

Also called bogolanfini.

The fabric appears in fashion, home décor, and African-inspired designs: a mudcloth throw pillow, mudcloth prints.
