mow

Shorten the lawn

To mow is to cut down grass, grain, or other vegetation, typically with a blade or machine: I need to mow the lawn this weekend.

A mower does the mowing.

To mow down is to kill or destroy in large numbers, evoking the sweeping motion of a scythe cutting through a field: The gunner mowed down the advancing troops.

A mow (rhymes with "cow") is also an old word for a stack of hay or grain stored in a barn.
