atomic mass unit
Subatomic weight standard
An atomic mass unit is a standard unit for expressing the mass of atoms and molecules, defined as one-twelfth the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
Abbreviated amu or u, it provides a practical scale for comparing particle masses: A hydrogen atom has a mass of about 1 amu.
Also called dalton in biochemistry.
