miscomprehend

Fail to understand

To miscomprehend is to understand something incorrectly—to grasp the wrong meaning from what was said, written, or shown.

It's slightly more formal than misunderstand and implies an active but faulty mental process: She miscomprehended his silence as indifference rather than grief.
