humorous misunderstandings
Funny crossed wires
Humorous misunderstandings are mix-ups in communication that produce comedy rather than conflict.
The phrase describes a staple of sitcoms and romantic comedies where characters operate on different assumptions, creating escalating confusion until the truth emerges: The whole episode was built on humorous misunderstandings about who was dating whom.
The humor typically depends on the audience knowing what the characters don't.
