distort
Bend out shape
To distort something is to change it in a way that makes it less true.
Distort suggests that the change is deliberate and that the motive is to deceive: The newspaper distorted the facts in its coverage of the event.
Distort is sometimes used in a neutral way to mean to change in a way that is undesirable: Sound waves are distorted in the open air by wind and temperature.
Distort can also mean to change the shape of something.
