waterlogged soil
Mud that squelches
Waterlogged soil is ground so saturated with water that air pockets between soil particles are displaced.
This creates anaerobic conditions hostile to most plant roots, which need oxygen to function.
Poorly drained areas, heavy clay, or prolonged rainfall can cause waterlogging: The waterlogged soil turned the garden into a swamp.
Drainage or raised beds are common remedies.
