minisub

Tiny underwater vessel

A minisub is a small submarine, typically designed for specialized tasks rather than military combat—research, underwater exploration, salvage operations, or transporting small crews to depths larger vessels can't reach.

The term sometimes appears in contexts of drug smuggling, where cartels use homemade minisubs to move cargo: Authorities intercepted a minisub off the coast.
