immaterialism

Reality lacks substance

Immaterialism is the philosophical position that matter doesn't exist independently of perception—that reality consists fundamentally of minds and ideas rather than physical substance.

Most associated with George Berkeley, who argued that objects exist only as they are perceived: Berkeley's immaterialism holds that the tree in the quad exists because God perceives it.

The term contrasts with materialism, which holds that only physical matter is real.
