matcha

Japanese tea powder

Matcha is finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves, originating in Japan.

Unlike regular tea, the whole leaf is consumed, dissolved in water or milk and whisked until frothy.

Matcha has a distinctive bright green color and earthy, slightly bitter taste.

It appears in lattes, desserts, and ice cream: I'll have a matcha latte.

The word comes from Japanese for "rubbed tea."
