numbat

Termite-eating marsupial

A numbat is a small Australian marsupial with distinctive reddish-brown fur marked by white stripes across its back.

Unlike most marsupials, numbats are active during the day and feed almost exclusively on termites, using their long sticky tongues to extract them from logs and soil.

The species is endangered, surviving mainly in protected areas of Western Australia.
