premature birth

Born too soon

Premature birth is delivery of a baby before the normal gestation period is complete—typically before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

The earlier the birth, the greater the health risks: underdeveloped lungs, difficulty regulating temperature, feeding problems.

The baby was in the NICU for weeks after her premature birth.

Also called preterm birth.
