marquisate

Marquis's hereditary territory

A marquisate is the rank, title, or territory of a marquis—a nobleman ranking above an earl or count and below a duke.

The term refers both to the dignity itself and to the lands over which a marquis held authority: The marquisate passed to his eldest son.

In historical contexts, marquisates functioned as semi-autonomous border territories.
