malting

Brewing's first step

Malting is the process of preparing grain—usually barley—for brewing or distilling.

The grain is soaked in water, allowed to germinate, then heated to stop growth.

This converts starches to sugars that yeast can ferment.

A malting or malt house is a facility where this process occurs: The old malting has been converted to apartments.
