blue-green algae

Photosynthetic aquatic microbes

Blue-green algae are photosynthetic microorganisms found in water and moist environments.

Despite the name, they are bacteria (cyanobacteria) rather than true algae.

They can form visible blooms in lakes and ponds, sometimes producing toxins harmful to humans and animals: The lake was closed due to a blue-green algae bloom.

Also called cyanobacteria.
