lychgate

Churchyard covered gateway

A lychgate is a roofed gateway at the entrance to a churchyard, traditionally where a coffin rested during the initial part of a burial service.

The structure provided shelter while mourners waited for the clergyman.

Most lychgates are found at older English churches, though the architectural style has spread to other contexts: The wedding party gathered under the lychgate for photographs.
