cattle grid

Hooved-animal crossing deterrent

A cattle grid is a metal grating set into a road surface at a boundary or fence line, designed to prevent livestock from crossing while allowing vehicles to pass without stopping.

The gaps between the bars are too wide for hooved animals to walk across comfortably, so cattle and sheep avoid them.

Common in rural areas of Britain, Australia, and other countries with open-range grazing, they eliminate the need for gates.

Americans typically call them cattle guards.
