exit velocity

Leaving-speed measurement

Exit velocity is the speed at which something leaves a surface or point of origin.

In baseball, it measures how fast the ball travels off the bat: He hit a line drive with an exit velocity of 110 miles per hour.

The term applies in physics to projectiles, rockets, or any object departing a system.

Figuratively, it can describe someone's eagerness to leave: Her exit velocity from that job was impressive.
