lemmas
Subsidiary proof statements
Lemmas is the plural of lemma, a word with distinct technical meanings in different fields.
In linguistics, a lemma is the base or dictionary form of a word—"run" is the lemma for runs, running, and ran.
In logic and mathematics, a lemma is a preliminary proposition proved in order to establish a larger theorem.
The plural lemmas works for both senses; the alternative lemmata appears mainly in academic contexts.
