law of universal gravitation
Newton's planetary principle
The law of universal gravitation is Newton's principle that every mass attracts every other mass with a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
It explains why apples fall and planets orbit: The law of universal gravitation governs everything from tides to spacecraft trajectories.
