koilocytes

Koilocytes are abnormal epithelial cells with a distinctive appearance: a shrunken nucleus surrounded by a clear halo or cavity in the cytoplasm.

Their presence in cervical tissue samples indicates human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and signals potential precancerous changes.

Pathologists look for koilocytes when screening Pap smears for cervical abnormalities.
