Bethesda system
Pap smear standardization
The Bethesda system is a standardized method for reporting cervical cytology results—the findings from Pap smears.
Developed at a 1988 conference in Bethesda, Maryland, it replaced older classification schemes with clearer categories for abnormal cells, helping clinicians decide on follow-up care.
Terms like ASCUS and LSIL come from this system.
