polyomavirus

Small DNA virus

A polyomavirus is any of a family of small DNA viruses that can cause tumors in some species.

Most polyomaviruses infect humans without causing disease, though certain types cause problems in immunocompromised patients.

The name comes from the Greek for "many tumors," reflecting their cancer-causing potential in laboratory animals.
