cervical smear

Gynecological cell sample

A cervical smear is a medical test in which cells are collected from the cervix and examined for abnormalities, particularly precancerous changes.

Also called a Pap smear or Pap test after George Papanicolaou, who developed it.

The procedure is a routine part of gynecological screening: She's due for her cervical smear next month.
