knucklebones

Ancient children's pastime

Knucklebones is an ancient game played by tossing and catching small objects—originally the ankle bones of sheep or goats, now usually plastic or metal pieces.

Players throw the pieces in the air and catch them on the back of the hand, or scoop them up between tosses.

Also called jacks or fivestones.

The singular knucklebone refers to one such playing piece or to the actual bone from which the game takes its name.
