hoosegow

Old Western jail

A hoosegow is a jail or prison.

The word comes from Spanish *juzgado* (a courtroom or tribunal) and entered American English through the Southwest borderlands.

It's informal and somewhat old-fashioned, with a humorous or folksy tone: They threw him in the hoosegow for the night.
