jails

Puts behind bars

Jails are facilities where people are confined, typically while awaiting trial or serving short sentences.

In American usage, jails are local institutions run by cities or counties, distinct from prisons, which hold those serving longer terms.

The verb jail means to put someone in such a facility: They jailed him overnight for disorderly conduct.
