peon

Low-ranking toiler

A peon is a worker of the lowest rank, especially one doing unskilled or menial labor.

The term originally referred to indebted laborers in Latin America bound to work until debts were paid.

Now it often describes anyone at the bottom of a hierarchy: I'm just a peon around here—nobody tells me anything.

The word carries connotations of powerlessness and expendability.
