calaboose

Small-town slammer

A calaboose is a jail, especially a small local lockup.

The word comes from Spanish and was once common in the American South and West but now sounds old-fashioned or humorous: They threw the drunk in the calaboose overnight.

It suggests a ramshackle frontier jail rather than a modern detention facility.
